Safety is vital to the oil and gas industry. According to the American Petroleum Institute, the oil and gas industry has some of the highest safety records with the least amount of incidents. The rate of job-related nonfatal injuries and illnesses for the U.S. oil and natural gas industry in 2005 was 3.4 per 100 full-time employees, compared to a rate of 4.5 for the entire U.S. private sector, according to the American Petroleum Institute (API) 2007 report “Workplace Safety.”
