Functional Safety
Machine and processes continue to become faster, more flexible and more powerful. In order to keep up with increasing complexity of automation and protection of safety operators and technicians while maintaining productivity and efficiency, protective measures have evolved. Traditionally, safety systems have been implemented separately to automation systems, operating independently and often in parallel to the automation system. Today as automation systems become more intelligent then so must the safety system. Using new technology to improve the functional operation of a machine is known as functional safety.

Rockwell Automation have developed a library file to be used with the SISTEMA calculation tool, based on EN ISO 13849-1. The SISTEMA tool, developed by Germany’s IFA organization, automates calculation of the attained Performance Level (PL) of the safety related parts of a machine’s control system in the context of EN ISO 13849-1. SISTEMA is available in English and German language versions and may be downloaded free of charge by following the link to BGIA’s website.
