Server Hardware
FactoryTalk® Metrics is a highly configurable and scalable application, and hardware requirements for a server vary considerably depending upon the size and architecture of the application. For example:
- The server and database components of a FactoryTalk Metrics application can be resident on a single computer, or distributed between multiple computers. The computer requirements for each architecture will be different.
- FactoryTalk Metrics applications can vary quite widely in size and in the amount of data collected and stored. The licensed workcell count ranges from 1 to over 200, and there is no license limit on the number of custom events.
- The number of clients accessing the system and viewing reports has an impact on hardware requirements.
The specifications for server computers listed here are to be considered minimums for a small FactoryTalk Metrics application where all services are running on one computer or for larger applications where there is a separate database server.
To use FactoryTalk Metrics effectively, your server computer should be a "server class" machine and must have at least:
- 2.0 GHz Pentium® 4 processor (multiple processors are supported)
- 2 GB of RAM
- 300 MB of free hard disk space to install FactoryTalk Metrics software
- 350 MB to install Microsoft SQL Server 2005 and related technologies
- 400 MB to install the Oracle client software (if used)
- Additional disk space, as required, to accommodate database growth
Though it is not required to have a separate machine to store the database for FactoryTalk Metrics, it is recommended. If you intend to have a separate database server, you should be aware of the following recommendations:
- Dual processors (Pentium III Xeon or better)
- 2 GB RAM
- Data storage options: RAID or multiple disks
Your Rockwell Automation salesperson or system integrator should be able to help you in assessing the hardware requirements for your particular application.
Server Software
The following software is required for server functions:
- Windows Server™ 2000 (SP3 or higher), Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition (SP1 or R2), or Windows XP Professional
(SP2 or higher)
- Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 SP1 (provided)
- Database software — either:
- SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition SP2 (provided), or Oracle 8.1.7 or Oracle 9.2.0.1.0 or Oracle 10g R2 Standard
- If Report Expert is used, then SQL Server 2005 is required and Oracle is not supported
- Microsoft Reporting Services 2005 (provided) — required for Report Expert
- Internet Information Server (IIS) — required for Report Expert
- FactoryTalk Activation (provided)
- FactoryTalk Automation Platform (provided)
- Adobe® Acrobat® Reader 8.0 to view documentation (provided)
- Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) 2.8 (provided)
- ODBC Driver Manager 3.510 or higher
- TCP/IP network connectivity
Client Hardware
To use the Configuration Console effectively, your personal computer must meet the following hardware requirements:
- 200 MHz Pentium II processor or better
- 64 MB of RAM
- 112 MB of free hard disk space (for QuickWeb only)
- 800 x 600 resolution monitor
Client Software
To view FactoryTalk Metrics reports (either Report Expert or QuickWeb) with a Web browser, the following software is required:
- Windows 2000 Professional or Server (SP3 or higher), Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition (SP1 or R2), or Windows XP (SP2 or higher)
- Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 SP1 (provided)
- HTTP 1.1
- TCP/IP network connectivity
To use the Configuration Console to configure FactoryTalk Metrics and create QuickWeb reports, the following additional software is required:
- Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) 2.8 (provided)
- Adobe Acrobat Reader 8.0 to view documentation (provided)
Control System Requirements
- OPC 1.0- or 2.0-compatible control system.
